As a plein-air artist, Lori Hight paints outdoors and on location. "Plein-air" is a painting style developed chiefly in France in the mid-19th century, characterized by the luminous effects of natural light and atmosphere. The very nature of plein-air painting has given Hight the opportunity to "stop and smell the roses" as she traverses the island seeking scenes that inspire. Hight has painted roadside coffee shacks, sailboats at harbor, tropical foliage, flowers and basically anything and everything.
Working in oil paints Hight eloquently expresses the sensual light of everyday objects in a style that is delightfully loose and playful. Her compositions are well crafted and the use of color is fresh and infused with the spontaneity of a moment captured.
After graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in Fine Art, Hight worked in graphic design. Her love for the natural world drew her to the Big Island where she continued a journey into plein-air painting. As a member of the Plein-air Painters of Hawaii, Hight and fellow artists traveled to Kauai for a painting session and a sharing of techniques and ideas.
Hight's work appears in many public and private collections. She has received honors in exhibitions and has appeared in several publications. Most recently, Hight's artwork was awarded 2nd place in the Kona Coffee Art Show.
"Since October of 2007 I've been living on the Big Island of Hawaii. Moving to a completely new place has had its' challenges, but amidst all of the work of moving, I've found much joy in painting. Tagging along with a plein-air group has helped me find some dynamite painting locations, and added to that are my own discoveries".
